Ex-convict terrorises family, held

A Canacona man convicted of twin murders in 1996 and released from jail last year was picked up by police on Saturday, after he was accused of terrorising family members and women in the locality.
Satyavan Dessai of Ponsulem, was arrested by Canacona police on Saturday, after his family members complained of misconduct and harassment.
According to police, Dessai’s family complained that he had been frequently creating a nuisance and on Saturday, came home and threatened the residents.
A police team later picked up Dessai and he reportedly tried to resist arrest, before he was taken to the police station.
He was later produced before the JMFC at Canacona, who referred the ex-convict for a medical examination. Police said Dessai was examined by doctors and was admitted at the IPHB in Bambolim for treatment.
Dessai was released from jail in 2015, after spending several years in jail following his conviction in the twin murders of Suloksha Marathe and Indu Dessai in 1996.
The cold-blooded murder of two women within a few days had shocked the entire taluka and the police had been clueless, until the convict himself spilled the beans to one of his unsuspecting colleagues while drinking in a bar.
This disclosure had led to his arrest and subsequent conviction.
Soon after his release from jail, many women from the locality were intimidated by his abnormal behaviour and had even submitted a memorandum to the police in December 2015, demanding action against him.
