Curchorem town has been hit by stray cattle menace and the issue had been raised several times during council meetings, especially after roads mishaps linked to stray cattle.
The CCMC had set up a cattle shed behind the CCMC building, but it has been lying unused for several years now.
When contacted, CCMC Municipal Engineer Diptesh Dessai informed The Goan about the new cattle shed proposed by the CCMC.
“On December 8, 2015, a letter was sent to the Directorate of Science and Technology to allot 5,000 sqmts of land at the garbage site in Khargateghati-Cacora to build a cattle shed to keep the impounded stray cattle. On February 12, 2016, a reminder was forwarded to the department but till date, there has been no reply from the Directorate of Science and Technology,” said Dessai.
The proposal for a different cattle shed has come in for some public criticism.
“If the municipal council already has a cattle shed, then what stops it from using the existing shed? The municipal council should make proper use of existing infrastructure and if they feel the need to have a bigger cattle shed, the council should go in for a new cattle shed,” said Manohar Naik, GCA member and resident Curchorem.
Added another local, Amey Kunkolienkar, “The CCMC should come clean on the expenses incurred on the existing cattle shed, staff and cattle feed.”
Speaking to The Goan, CCMC Chairperson Sushant Naik said he was aware of the stray cattle problem confronting Curchorem town and added that a person had been employed to impound the cattle.
He said the proposal for a new cattle shed was forwarded to the Directorate of Science and Technology. “I will pursue the matter once the election code of conduct comes to an end,” Naik assured.
When asked to explain the need for a new cattle shed, when the existing cattle shed had been lying unutilised for several years, the CCMC chairperson assured to inquire into the matter.
