A former municipal engineer of Mapusa Municipal Council Vyankatesh Sawant had Rs 10,000 from docked off from his salary for failing to provide information as per the Right to Information Act.
The State Information Commissioner (SIC) in an order has said the penalty shall be deducted from the salary of the then Public Information Officer, Vyankatesh Sawant in two instalments of Rs 5,000 each.
The amount shall be credited to the government treasury.
Based on a complaint filed by RTI activist Jawaharlal Shetye, the State Information Commisssioner initiated penalty proceedings against former PIO and MMC Municipal Engineer Prashant Narvekar and then PIO Vyankatesh Sawant who was also a municipal engineer in the council.
The SIC said that the complainant was forced to approach the commission as both the PIOs had failed to furnish the required information.
