MARGAO
With citizens complaining of beggars’ nuisance in and around the Old Market area of the city, the Fatorda police on Sunday detained and arrested six beggars near Old Market circle for causing annoyance to general public and obstructing smooth flow of traffic.
Fatorda police station in-charge, PI Kapil Nayak informed that the police had received complaints from the general public over the menace of beggars, especially near the Old Market circle.
He said action was initiated against the beggars under the provisions of the Goa Daman and Diu Prevention of Begging Act 1972.
The arrested beggars will be produced before the Judicial Magistrate First Class, Margao, on Monday, which will take a decision how to deal with the arrested persons. “The JMFC will decide whether to lodge the beggars at any house or to release them. Right now, the beggars are in the custody of the police,” he added.
Complaints have been galore from citizens and motorists that beggars swarm around the Old Market circle, with both adults as well as minors posing nuisance, especially when the traffic halts at the signals.
Incidentally, the Fatorda police had in the past initiated similar action against the beggars, but the situation returned back to full circle after some days.
