MARGAO
Is the proposed Fatorda police station going to be the first police station to be carved out exclusively based on political boundaries instead of factions such as population, size of the policing area et al?
It appears heading in that direction with the Manohar Parrikar-led government rushing with the setting up of the Fatorda police station to placate alliance partner, Goa Forward chief and TCP Minister, Vijai Sardesai. While Vijai asserted that the proposed Fatorda police station as demanded by him will have the Fatorda Municipal area as the beat area, district police Chief Arvind Gawas said the boundaries of the proposed police station will be known only after the government issues a notification for setting up the police station.
"The proposed police station will look after only the Fatorda constituency. The Chief Minister has announced on the floor of the House about the boundaries of the Fatorda police station. There ought to be no doubt that the jurisdiction of the Fatorda police station will be restricted to the Fatorda Municipal area and within the limits of Fatorda constituency", he said.
Vijai's comments assume significance given that a proposal mooted by the Goa police to set up a separate police station for Fatorda two years ago had envisaged that the Fatorda police station will comprise of Nuvem village and the Fatorda Municipal area.
District police chief Arvind Gawas said he is not too sure about the jurisdiction of the Fatorda police station. "There was a proposal earlier mooted by the police department to set up a police station at Fatorda. I do not know how many areas or villages were proposed to be included in the Fatorda police station. We will come to know when the government issues the notification", SP Gawas said.
In the meantime, even as most of the police stations across the State have been facing shortage of officers and constabulary, the police higher ups have recommended Fatorda police station will stand on political boundaries
adequate staff to man the affairs of the new police station.
Information gathered by The Goan has revealed that the Fatorda police station will be headed by a police officer of the rank of a Police Inspector, who will be assisted by four Police sub-inspectors and two Assistant Sub-inspectors. As far as the constabulary is concerned, it has been recommended that the new police station should have eight head constables, as many as 35 police constables and five lady constables. The police department has also recommended 10 Home guard at the disposal of the new police station to carry out other duties.
