The Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) has raided shops selling substandard cashew nuts at Calangute and seized goods worth Rs. 1 lakh.
FDA officials also shut down three shops which were operating without obtaining necessary license and seized substandard cashew nuts found in three shops.
The FDA had received several complaints about substandard cashew nuts being sold in the coastal areas of North Goa.
Taking cognisance of this, the FDA took this action through a special campaign to ensure the safety of tourists in the ongoing tourism season.
FDA officials inspected six cashew nut shops at Calangute. Three of the shops were found to be running without an FSSAI license and were directed to close down their shops.
The quality of cashew nuts sold in three shops was found substandard after verification and FDA officials found that shop owners were selling cashewnut packets by mixing spoiled cashew nuts with good cashew nuts.
FDA Officers Richard Noronha and Madhav Kavalekar conducted the raid under the guidance of the FDA Director Shweta Dessai.
Officials informed that this campaign will be continued and strict vigilance will be kept on cashew nut shops along the beach and legal action will be taken against the culprits.
