With trees and wood washed by the gushing rainwater still stuck up at the Paroda bridge , the local panchayat has on Tuesday made a plea to the authorities to remove the debris at the bridge before the onset of monsoons.
The Paroda bridge gets submerged under flood waters every year, and residents have feared that with the trees and wood still stuck up under the bridge, the village may witness unprecedented flooding this season.
A delegation of the Paroda Panchayat led by Sarpanch Paulina Fernandes and deputy Sarpanch Shailesh Jotkar along with panchas inspected the bridge on Tuesday only to find trees and wood stuck under the bridge.
“As it is, the Paroda bridge is submerged under flood water every year. The presence of the trees and debris under the bridge will further aggravate flooding this year,” the deputy sarpanch informed, fearing that the bridge may be washed away if the debris is not lifted away.
They pointed out that Chief Minister Pramod Sawant had inspected the Paroda bridge after last year’s flooding and had given instructions to clear the debris immediately. They, however, lamented that the trees and wood have not been removed to date.
A delegation of the panchayat will call on Cuncolim MLA & Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao to take up the issue with the concerned authorities to avert disaster in the coming monsoons.
