As the Water Supply Department has cautioned about restricted water supply to South Goa in view of the planned two-day shutdown at the Selaulim water treatment plant on September 7-8, citizens have questioned the government’s decision to schedule the shutdown on September 8, the feast day of Our Lady of Vailankanni.
PWD officials, however, said that while the 100 MLD plant will be shut down for upgradation, the 180 MLD plant will remain operational and continue to supply water to South Goa.
A resident of Manora-Raia, Anthony Fernandes, called PWD officials on Saturday to find out why the department had scheduled the shutdown for September 7-8, given that people across Goa will be celebrating the feast of Our Lady of Vailankanni on September 8.
“Is there so much urgency that the PWD had to schedule the shutdown only on September 7-8?” Fernandes questioned.
A senior PWD official said the two-day shutdown was being undertaken as part of the upgradation of the 100 MLD plant to 200 MLD. He, however, hastened to add that the 180 MLD Selaulim plant would continue to supply water to South Goa on both days.
“The shutdown will not cause any major disruption to water supply since the 180 MLD plant will remain in operation. We are shutting down only the 100 MLD plant. If the work is completed as planned, water will be released through the 100 MLD plant as well on September 7 itself,” the official said.
