Placing faith in a newly appointed maid proved costly when gold and cash worth Rs 30 lakh were stolen from a bungalow in Porvorim on Friday.
According to police, the complainant had gone to a temple in Porvorim for darshan, leaving the maid alone in the house.
When the complainant returned home, she found the main door open and the maid missing.
Suspecting something fishy, the complainant checked the cupboards in the house and found that jewellery valued at about Rs 27 and cash of about Rs 3 lakh had gone missing. The Porvorim police was then notified of the burglary.
Police sources said the maid had gone to the complainant’s house to do housework barely two days earlier and claimed that she was from Betim. The complainant had not obtained the maid’s full name, address or identity card while hiring her.
Police investigation revealed that no such woman had been living in Betim area.
Porvorim police have registered a case and further investigation is being conducted by Police Sub-Inspector Sachin Shirodkar.
