CANACONA
The cleaner of a truck was injured while the driver escaped unhurt as a Karnataka-bound truck loaded with iron bars fell off the highway after crashing through the crash barriers at Talpona late Sunday night.
According to Canacona police, the Karnataka-registered truck was proceeding towards Karnataka, when the driver reportedly lost control at about 9.30 on Sunday night.
The truck hit the road divider and damaged a street light, before ramming into the crash barriers and going off the road near the Talpona River.
The driver escaped unhurt while the cleaner Shiv Kumar sustained injuries to his hand and was taken to the Canacona Community Health Centre for treatment. The truck was badly damaged in the mishap with its axle and both rear wheels snapped from the vehicle. The iron rods fell by the side of the road.
Hawaldar Nitin Desai of Canacona police is investigating the mishap.
This is the fifth truck mishap along the highway within nine days.
Two Karnataka-bound interstate trucks fell by the side of the highway barely metres apart in separate mishaps within five hours in Gulem-Canacona in the wee hours of July 10.
On July 11, a truck loaded with bananas skid off the road at Loliem and fell on its side while trying to avoid knocking down stray cattle on the road.
On July 12, a driver had a lucky escape when his goods-laden interstate truck narrowly missed falling into a gorge off the highway at Karmalghat.
