The Indian Panorama section at the 46th International Film Festival of India opened with the screening of feature film ‘Priyamanasam’ and non-feature film 'Goonga Pehelwan’.
Chief Guest, Col Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, Minister I&B (MoS) along with Secretary I&B, Sunil Arora inaugurated the ceremony.
Addressing the media and delegates, Col Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore said, “It's a privilege to be in the company of people who are experts in telling stories. Cinema is all about a way of portraying life through visuals and stories and undoubtedly it is the most powerful medium of communicating and entertaining people all over the world. The government realized the power of cinema with International Film Festival of India and this is why the Indian Panorama brings a stellar line up of Indian films made by talented filmmakers.”
The minister along with Secretary I&B felicitated the jury of both non-feature film and feature film sections. Those felicitated included non-feature films jury Makarand Brahme, Meenakshi Rai, Pramod Purswane, Sunzu Bachaspatimayum, V Rama Rao, and Vinoo Choliparambil. The jury of feature films included Aribam Syam Sharma (Chairperson), Bhagiathi, Bharathi S Pradhan, Bijaya Jena, M K Bhaskara Rao, Mahesh Aney, Major Ravi, Panchakshari, Phonsok Ladakhi, Praveen Sattaru, Tapan Biswas.
Written and directed by Vinod Mankara, Priyamanasam is based on the life of 17th century Malayalam poet-scholar Unnayi Varrier. The film portrays true and authentic record of the agony and ecstasy experienced by Varrier when he wrote his ‘incredibly romantic’ Kathakali play, Nalacharitham Attakadha.
Priyamanasam is the third film to be made in Sanskrit after actor-director G V Iyer’s National Award-winning films, Adi Shankaracharya (1983) and Bhagavad Gita (1993).
Goonga Pehelwan is a documentary that follows India’s most successful deaf athlete, Virender Singh, on his unlikely quest to reach the Rio Olympics 2016 and become only the second deaf
wrestler in the history of the Olympics to do so. The film is directed by three young directors, Mit Jani, Prateek Gupta and Vivek Chaudhary, from Ahmedabad.
IFFI 2015 will bring a perfect mélange of films in Indian Panaroma section that will showcase 26 feature and 21 non-feature films.
