Finally, the work of hotmixing of the crucial road from Calangute church to the police station was inaugurated at a cost of Rs 7.5 crore.
The entire work on the road has been taken up by the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC).
The road will be a four-lane road with a divider in the middle.
The Calangute panchayat has also decided to plant coconut trees on both sides of the four-lane stretch in order to add value to the aesthetics of the key road that leads to the popular beach village.
Leader of Opposition and local MLA, Michael Lobo said that work on the road was taken up around eight years back.
“I remember then chief minister late Manohar Parrikar had laid the foundation stone for doing up this road,” Lobo recalled.
He said it was the main stretch that brought tourists from around the world to the beach village and therefore efforts were made to widen the road and complete all other allied activities before the road was hotmixed.
The electricity poles have been shifted and the power lines to the new power sub-station were also placed underground along the stretch.
Several new culverts were constructed at different places so that the free flow of water was allowed across the fields.
The Calangute MLA informed that CM Pramod Sawant who is the chairman of GSIDC and Vice Chairman of GSIDC Joshua D’Souza also contributed to sanctioning funds for the road.
“A lot of people “ Calangute communidade, panchayat, farmers and the locals, who had to bear with the bumpy road for the last several years -- have contributed for the road to become a reality,” Lobo said.
“We also received a lot of flak because of the delay in completing the road but finally the end product should come good and we are happy the day has finally arrived,” he added.
He said all internal roads of the village will also be hotmixed and urged people to cooperate with the officials while the hotmixing work was taken up.
Calangute Sarpanch Shawn Martins said the work of hotmixing of the road will be completed within weeks as work will be taken up lane-wise.
He also apologised to the people for the long delay to complete the road work.
“We plan to plant coconut trees on both sides of the road to add value to the entry of our village with the support of farmers,” Martins said.
