CANACONA

Even as hotmixing works are in progress on a war footing on the NH66 highway, the Canacona Congress has reiterated its demand for action against the over-speeding of commercial vehicles along the Canacona-Margao stretch of the highway.
GPCC General Secretary Janardhan Bhandari with other Congress leaders and Goa Forward leader Vikas Bhagat called on the newly posted Canacona Dy Collector Madhu G Narvekar and submitted a second memorandum, informing him of their previous memorandum on March 24 demanding action against overloading and over-speeding of commercial vehicles as cases of accidents are increasing due to rash traffic movement on the Canacona-Margao route.
Bhandari also demanded the installation of weighing machines at all border gates to check for the overloading of vehicles.
Dy Collector Madhu Narvekar, who also holds additional charges as chief officer of Canacona Municipal Council and DRDO (South) Project Officer, gave a patient hearing to the delegation led by Bhandari.
“Dy Collector as the Taluka head of Disaster Management Authority assured to provide all possible help to the people of Canacona,” informed Bhandari.
As part of their campaign against bad roads, a group led by Bhandari proceeded to the Polem check post and stopped heavy vehicles.
“We stopped heavy vehicles with the help of Canacona Police Inspector and his staff at the Polem check post due to ongoing hotmixing of the road from Gulem to Margao.”
“This movement of heavy vehicles creates obstacles to the ongoing work and delays development work. We also requested authorities concerned to have a proper schedule for transportation. Authorities also agreed with our proposal,” Bhandari added.
In the meantime, Bhandari also visited Palolem to take stock of the damage to property on account of the strong winds on Monday night.
He later met the assistant engineer (electricity) and discussed the shortage of staff which creates hardships for the electricity officers to meet the challenges.
