In a bid to promote relations with various communities, the Vasco police on Wednesday organised an Iftar ritual with prominent citizens of different religions in the port town.
Mormugao DySP Nilesh Rane and Police Inspector Kapil Nayak also used the gathering to spread awareness of various rules and also took up the discussion of forming a Peace Committee to spread communal harmony and peace in Vasco.
"The main objective of this event was to maintain communal harmony and to follow up on the peace committee for Vasco. We had convened a meeting on the proposed peace committee around 15 days ago and we had said this will be a continuous process,” DySP Rane told reporters.
“We have Eid coming soon and we also wanted to get prepared for the festival and also alert the people to avoid any chances of any clashes. We had convened a meeting for the peace committee but it coincided with the time the Muslims break their fast and we then decided to host an Iftar as our gesture of goodwill. We also invited members from across communities to join in the Iftar and make it successful.”
DySP Rane recalled that when he was a police inspector, he would do something different, such as getting senior citizens together and offering them sweets and fruits and celebrating festivals by going to their houses.
“We hope to continue with such out-of-the-box initiatives which can be of help to people and bring the police and residents closer to each other," said Rane.
Congress Minority Chairman Nazir Khan hailed the police for this unique initiative in the port town.
“Members of various religions arrived at his request. It was a great moment to celebrate our Iftar with Hindu and Christian brothers. Such an initiative must be replicated across Goa to create awareness and improve communal harmony and peace," said Khan.
