Financial aid urged to tackle garbage

Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte said the State government should support the panchayats by providing financial assistance to continue its work to tackle garbage and also to set up mini treatment plants in its areas.
The State government has kicked off Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan, by spreading some awareness through advertising on various buses.
Speaking to The Goan, Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte said buses is the only visual medium which travels to every corner of Goa, passes through every road and street of Goa.
“The commuters who travel in the buses also get a message of cleanliness and its benefits. But what about implementation? Unless the panchayat take up this mission seriously the objective will not be accomplished,” said Khaunte.
“Penha de Franca, Salvador-do-Mundo and Socorro panchayats are spending lakh of rupees for collection of garbage on door-to-door basis. The State government should support the panchayats with financial assistance to continue with its work and also to set up mini treatment plants in their areas,” said Khaunte.
A medical practitioner, Dr Vishnu Prabhu Dessai, appreciated the publicity campaign of the State government by displaying advertisement on KTC buses. He said more such publicity campaigns are required to create awareness.
“The State government should advise the panchayats and municipal councils to take necessary step to ensure cleanliness in their areas and if required provide financial assistance to accomplish the task. Each individual support will add to the success of the initiative,” said Dr Dessai.
