MARGAO
A fire at the Sonsodo waste dumping yard gave a scare for the waste managers and the Margao Municipal Council on Monday noon, again bringing to fore the question of non-disposal of the thousands of cubic meters of waste lying at the site.
The fire was reportedly triggered by an electric spark to an overhead 33 KV power line, with the dry grass underneath catching fire, before the fire spread to the waste dump yard. No sooner the fire was detected at the site, Fomento Green personnel at the site immediately swung into action with fire fighting gear to bring the fire under control.
Given that the fire threatened to spread to the dump yard, MMC Sanitary Inspector, Viraj Arabekar, who rushed to the spot, requisitioned the Margao fire brigade as a precautionary measure to bring the fire under control.
Arabekar told The Goan that the fire started at the dry grass after an electric spark to an overhead 33 KV power line caught fire, before spreading to the waste at the dumping site. He said the entire operation was capped within an hour’s time as both Fomento Green’s personnel and the fire brigade brought the fire under control.
“As a precautionary measure, the Power officials were informed of the incident and the department immediately went for a shut down. Electricity officials also visited the spot to take stock of the situation,” Arabekar added.
Chief Officer Johnson Fernandes said the fire was brought under control within an hour’s time, adding that the MMC is also maintaining a close vigil at the site given that the summer season has set in, making the dump yard susceptible to fires.
