A fire broke out on Sunday evening at the Koparde Livestock Breeding Centre under the Veterinary Department in Sattari taluka, causing an estimated loss of around Rs 30,000. However, quick action by the Valpoi Fire Brigade helped save property worth nearly Rs 3 lakh. Damage to biological assets is also suspected in the incident.

According to information, the fire started suddenly in dry fodder at the centre. The incident, which took place in the evening, caused panic in the area. Staff at the site first tried to control the fire, but were unsuccessful, following which the Valpoi Fire Brigade was called.

Fire personnel reached the spot quickly and played an important role in bringing the blaze under control. Their timely response helped prevent a major disaster and saved property worth about Rs 3 lakh. Despite this, the preliminary estimate of damage remains around Rs 30,000.

The exact cause of the fire is not yet known. However, it is suspected that a carelessly discarded cigarette may have started the blaze. Strong winds at the time caused the fire to spread quickly, with nearby dry grass catching fire rapidly.

A large quantity of dry fodder was destroyed, and damage to biological assets is also suspected. The centre has a large number of cattle, and officials said that if the fire had reached that area, it could have led to a major tragedy.

The large area of the breeding centre is covered with dry grass, increasing the risk of such incidents in future, locals said. They have urged the authorities and management to take preventive steps and be more careful.

Meanwhile, the fire caused concern among residents nearby. Thick smoke was seen from a distance, showing the intensity of the blaze. There is growing demand for better preparedness and planning to prevent such incidents.
