MARGAO: In what is being suspected as the handiwork of miscreants, 13 two-wheelers and a car were set afire at the Khareband locality of Margao shortly after midnight.
While the Margao police have registered a FIR against unknown miscreants under section 435 and 427 of the IPC causing setting the vehicle on fire, the incident has only raised concerns with hundreds of vehicles parked alongside the roads across the city.
The incident is believed to have occurred between 1 am to 1.30 am at two places, near Pappu Garage and Pedda-Khareband. While seven two-wheelers were completely gutted in the fire near the garage, another six vehicles and a car were set afire at Pedda.
A resident, Salim Khan, suffered the most as his two-wheelers were completely gutted in the fire. His car was also partially damaged in the incident.
Another resident, Gurudas Talulikar, told The Goan that, the incident must have occurred between 1 am to 1.30 am and the miscreants must have used petrol to set the vehicles on fire. “After the fire came to the notice of the residents, we all tried to extinguish it with water, but in vain,” he said.
Margao Fire Officer Gill De Souza told the media persons that the most of the vehicles were already gutted in the fire before the fire brigade could arrive at the spot of the incident. The occurrence of the incident at two places in the same locality has only raised strong suspicions that it is the handiwork of the miscreants.
Margao MLA Digambar Kama along with ward Councilor Manoj Masurkar, DySP Raju Raut Desai and Margao PI Kapil Nayak visited the spot in the morning to take stock of the situation. After inspecting the area and talking to the residents, Margao MLA told the media that he has asked DySP Raju Raut and PI Kapil Nayak to take the issue seriously and bring the culprits to book. “The residents told me that they have been parking their vehicles at the place for years. The people have no differences since some of them do not even lock their vehicles after parking,” Kamat said, while exuding confidence that the police will bring the culprits to book.
Margao PI Kapil Nayak told the media later in the evening that a FIR has been registered against unknown culprits. “We have interrogated some people and investigations are underway to nab the culprits,” he said.
