Margao Municipal New Market.
MARGAO
The Margao Municipal Council has been caught napping over its failure to implement a slew of measures in and around the New Market recommended by the Fire Services.
Eight days after the massive fire engulfed the New Market on December 6 last, the Fire Services had eight days later on January 3, 2024, had made a host of recommendations to tone up fire safety measures in the congested market, including measures to ensure the market’s entry and exit are keep free from obstructions.
Since the time Deputy Director, Fire Services Rajan Haldankar had dashed off a letter to the Margao Municipal Council, the BJP-backed Civic body, controlled by Congress-turned-BJP Margao MLA Digambar Kamat, has been presided over by three Chief Officers “ Gaurish Shankwalkar, Ajit Panchwadkar and incumbent CO Melvyn Vaz.
Sadly, the recommendations made by the Fire services seemed to have been thrown to the winds for reasons best known to the municipal babus till date.
A Fire official told The Goan that the Fire services had made recommendations to the MMC to tone up the fire safety measures in the congested markets from time to time over the years, but in vain.
