Calangute MLA Michael Lobo has called for continuous patrolling of the North Goa coastal belt to prevent potential disturbances during the peak tourist season.
Lobo emphasized that the coastal areas of Candolim-Calangute-Baga, Anjuna-Vagator-Arpora, and Morjim-Arambol-Keri need tailored security measures, with a higher police presence to manage the influx of tourists.
Highlighting the popularity of these beaches, Lobo explained, “Candolim, Calangute-Baga, and Arpora are well-known tourist hotspots. When disturbances occur, we often blame the police, which isn’t always fair.”
He noted that incidents often arise when tourists, intoxicated and unruly, engage in conflicts with restaurant or taxi owners.
Lobo raised concerns about the open consumption of alcohol on beaches, despite local laws prohibiting such behaviour.
“Tourists are frequently seen with bottles and glasses on the beach, disregarding regulations. The ‘dos and don’ts’ are not being followed,” he added, stressing the need for stricter enforcement.
He also called for a significant deployment of the Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) along the coast, as per the demands of these areas.
“Police presence is essential. Continuous patrolling is very much required. Our coastal belt needs a different approach, and extra personnel are necessary to handle the tourist population effectively,” Lobo said.
He further emphasized the economic importance of areas like Anjuna, Vagator, Arpora, Morjim, Arambol, and Keri, which contribute heavily to the state’s tourism revenue, advocating for improved infrastructure in these locations.
Despite the season just beginning, several incidents have already been reported, prompting Lobo’s call for enhanced measures to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for both tourists and locals.
