First rains: Flooding jitters come back to haunt Panaji

PANAJI

Memories of yesteryears came back to haunt the capital city as continuous downpour in the last 24 hours left parts of Panaji submerged under water.

Although the flooding effect was not too much, residents and businessmen along the 18th June Road complained of water entering their premises.

Mary Immaculate High School also bore the brunt of a pipeline being laid which chocked drains leading to water entering the school.

The school authorities had to summon the fire brigade to help in pumping out the water which took almost two hours.

The ongoing smart city work added to the problem in the low lying areas. Mala in particular was affected when the mud from the ongoing work of laying a pipeline chocked drains leading to water being accumulated in many parts.

Water Resources Department Chief Engineer Pramod Badami said the water entering the school was not because of the regular flooding that occurs in Mala.

"The problem was due to localised choking of drains. The drains got choked and water suddenly entered the school”, said Badami.

Mayor Rohit Monserrate while admitting that there was some issue of water logging in Mala said WRD is coming out with a permanent solution to the water logging issue and once it is done there will be no problem in Mala.

Deputy Mayor, Sanjeev Naik said, "our labourers cleared the drains on a war footing till late night. Plastic bottles were found stuck ", he said.
