Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho on Friday said the Transport department has launched the Village Level Entrepreneur (VLE) initiative to enable locals to be self-employed in offering relevant services to people visiting RTO offices.

While the VLE initiative was initially launched in Mormugao taluka, Godinho said the initiative would be launched across the State.

The minister also organised an orientation programme of Parivahan services in association with the transport department at Dabolim.

Speaking to reporters after inaugurating a dry fruits shop in Dabolim, Godinho said the VLE initiative would help a lot of people be self-employed as these people would now be able to offer various transport related services at the RTO offices.

"There has to be improvement in citizen services and our emphasis is on digitisation of most services at the RTOs and as fast as possible. We have also introduced online facilities so that people don’t even have to visit the RTO and we have as many as 60 services on a digital platform," said Godinho.

Despite the digital services, Godinho said some people were still visiting the RTO offices to get certain services.

"We have seen there used to be agents outside RTO offices, but we have now created Village Level Entrepreneurs and we will allow these people to get RTO works done and we will allow them to officially charge Rs 100 per service from the people.”

“If one person gets 20 services, they can easily make Rs 2,000 a day and this will act as a self-employment opportunity. Whenever they want, they can work because there will be many such people who will offer different RTO services and people will have a choice of going to any one present at that particular time," said Godinho.

“We have launched this system in Mormugao as of now and we will launch these services across Goa soon," said Godinho.

Commenting on the dry fruits shop opening at Dabolim, Godinho said there had been a demand to set up a CISF colony in this area.

“However, I insisted that they can go to the interiors and we can develop this place for private players and have world class facilities in the area," said Godinho.

Shop owner Fahad Kutty said this was their 125th store in India.

"We are sourcing dates from Madina and many other countries and we also have various other dry fruits available at this store," said Kutty.
