Perhaps the first time since the new fishing season began earlier this month on August 1, Goa's lone wholesale fish market saw a bumper arrival of fish from local landing points and from across the border on Friday.

Right from kingfish to mackerels, sardines, squids and a variety of fish made its presence felt at the
r />wholesale fish market and a much cheaper rate. A kilogram of kingfish was available for a rate ranging between Rs 300-350, while the wholesale market saw a virtual glut of squids in the market.
A kilogram of squids was available for as low as Rs 100 on Friday.
Perhaps for the first time this season, mackerels were available at a much cheaper price on Friday
compared to the last fortnight. A basketful of mackerels brought to the market directly from the local fishing jetties and by the traditional fishermen was sold for a rate, ranging from Rs 400 to Rs 700, finally bringing cheers to the fish lovers.
Sources in the know attributed the cheap availability of fish in the wholesale fish market on two
counts, one the ongoing month of shravan where most Hindu families abstain from non-veg food and the glut in the supply from the local jetties as well as from across the border.
Sadly, the ground reality inside the wholesale fish market has not changed for
the better.
Stench, muck, haphazard parking et all welcomed fish retailers as well as people from Salcete and outside, who descend in the wholesale fish market for bulk purchases.
Fish wholesalers as well as retailers were seen selling fish right in the muck for want of better amenities from the South Goa Planning and Development Authority.
The promised turnaround in the SGPDA wholesale fish market is yet to see light of the day.
