MARGAO
In an interesting development, Town and Country Planning Minister, Vijai Sardesai on Friday put his foot down on the proposed World Bank funded cyclone risk mitigation centre on the GSUDA's acquired agriculture fields at Madel.
"I do not know what the disaster management authorities have proposed it at Madel. All I know is that no such proposal will ever see light of the day at Madel. I am not aware of any such proposal being put forth by the disaster management officials and neither will I agree for one at Madel", Vijai told The Goan on Friday.
The TCP Minister recalled that he had put his foot down five years against the BJP government's proposal to build the Margao KTC Bus stand at the acquired land at Madel. "I have been consistent in my opposition to any project proposed on the acquired land at Madel. Even when I was in the opposition, I had successfully stalled the BJP government's move to shift the Margao bus stand on the acquired land," the TCP Minister said.
Given that officials looking after disaster management have planned to hold demarcation of the 1.37 lakh acquired land to carve out land admeasuring 4000 sq. mts for the proposed Cyclone Risk Mitigation Center, the TCP Minister took up the issue with Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, conveying his strong opposition to the World Bank funded project.
"The CM has assured me that he would look into the issue. He opined that the project must have been proposed before the new government assumed power," Vijai said.
Meanwhile, disaster danagement officials said that they would not bulldoze their way with the cyclone risk mitigation centre at Madel if the local MLA and the farmers are opposed to the project. "There's no question of going ahead with the project with the MLA expressing his strong opposition to the project. As per the Centre's directives, we are supposed to set up the centres along the coast line. We will now look out for new land to set up the centre in Salcete," remarked an official in the know.
Disaster management officials had set their eyes on the Madel fields since the proposal to set up the Cyclone Risk Mitigation Centre proposed at Velim had come a cropper after local residents of Cumbhea Bhatt expressed their reservations to the World Bank funded project.
