In a move which could steer fishing boats away from fossil fuel, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) with the help of Directorate of Fisheries conducted trails to convert petrol-fuelled fishing boats to be fuelled by LPG.

Dy Director of Fisheries Chandrakant Velip was present to review the trials conducted by HPCL in the Mandovi River on Wednesday.

After a review of the trails of LPG powered fishing boats, HPCL said using LPG as fuel would make it more affordable for fishermen, besides also minimising pollution. Similar trials were conducted in Kerala last month.

HPCL said 10 HP engines used by traditional fishing vessels consume 5-6 litres of petrol per hour. However, cheaper and cleaner LPG powered engines will require only 2.5 kg of fuel per hour. Besides, one LPG kit can power more than one engine.

HPCL LPG head ED (I/C) LPG Anuj Kumar Jain, ED LPG -Sales and Marketing M P Rethees Kumar, West Zone General Manager Mohit Dhawan and CRM-Goa Sunil Mare were present to review the pilot project.
