Ten months after Goa Police announced the launch of the ‘Fit Goa Police’ initiative, the State government on Tuesday clarified that no such formal programme has been launched for police personnel.
In a written reply tabled in the Legislative Assembly, Chief Minister and Home Minister Pramod Sawant stated that while a Body Mass Index (BMI) test was conducted for 5,315 police personnel by the Police Medical Dispensary, none were found medically unfit.
“The Police Department has not launched the ‘Fit Goa Police’ programme for the fitness of the police. However, the Police Medical Dispensary has conducted BMI tests of 5,315 police personnel,” the reply to an unstarred question by Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao stated.
Sawant further clarified that the question of continuing such a programme does not arise.
On the availability of fitness infrastructure, the government informed the House that gymnasiums are available at some police stations and that physical training parades and yoga sessions are conducted to promote the fitness and well-being of police personnel.
The ‘Fit Goa Police’ programme was to include regular BMI assessments and offer personalised lifestyle recommendations to help officers maintain a healthy BMI.
