PANAJI
Around 360 employees of the Goa Secretariat will lay down their pens for a day and wield brooms to clean up designated areas within the limits of the Corporation of the City of Panaji to celebrate the third anniversary of Swachh Bharat Mission.
The Chief Secretary will flag off the clean-up drive on September 23 at 10 am at the Corporation of the City of Panaji while North Goa Collector Nila Mohanan will flag off the drive at the Collectorate Office building. At the same time, Finance Secretary Daulat Hawaldar will flag off the drive at the Church Square.
The employees working at the Secretariat, right from the level of additional secretary to joint secretary and undersecretary and section officers, have been divided into three groups which will clean the premises on the ground floor of the CCP building, the ground floor of the Collectorate building and the Church Square.
A circular to this effect issued by Smita Hede, Under Secretary (General Administration), has requested all employees of the secretariat to "wholeheartedly participate in the drive and contribute towards the successful implementation of the Swatch Bharat Mission."
The decision to hold the drive was taken by the Department of Urban Development of the Government of Goa as part of the larger drive to celebrate the third anniversary of the Swatch Bharat Mission and pursuant to the directives of the Ministry of Housing
and Urban Development
of the Government of India.
The drive will be held from 10 am to 1 pm on Saturday which is otherwise a holiday for the government staffers.
Every year the central as well as state governments commemorate the Swatch Bharat Mission with photo ops of ministers and government staff donning aprons and masks and gloves and wielding brooms as they seek to send across a message of cleanliness in a country where public litter is one of the biggest urban evils.
The drives have been met with mixed success with garbage being a recurring problem especially in Goa.
