Urban Development Minister Francis D’Souza laid the foundation stone for the development of an open space in Khorlim, Mapusa amid controversy over ownership of the land.
The foundation stone was laid amidst heavy police presence after a tenant claiming ownership of the land complained to the Mapusa police of a law and order problem.
In a complaint to Mapusa Police, Meghashyam Gawande said he was a tenant of the land, next to his mundkarial house, and said the matter was pending before the administrative tribunal.
“Despite the matter being subjuduce, Mapusa Municipal Council is going ahead with the laying of the foundation stone in the disputed land,” Gawande said in his complaint and added that there was possibility of disturbance of peace in the area.
MMC Chairperson Rohan Kavlekar said there was no issue as the foundation stone was laid on a neutral site.
“We are carrying development in an undisputed land. We are not interfering in the part that is under litigation,” Kavlekar said.
Urban Development Minister Francis D’Souza then went ahead to lay the foundation stone in the presence of Kavlekar, Chief Officer Clen Madeira, Municipal Engineer Hussein Shah Muzzawar and others.
The stone was laid to develop an open space for Vidhyanagar Municipal Garden, at Vidyanagar-Khorlim in Ward 14 represented by councilor Dipti Lanjekar.
