The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI)-recognized monuments in Old Goa are undergoing significant upgradation and enhancements with yet another G20 meeting slated next month will see international VIP delegates taken on an excursion to the UNESCO world heritage site.

G20 Goa in collaboration with the ASI Goa Circle, has scheduled a tour for the G20 delegates attending the 4th Tourism Working Group meeting on June 22. The delegates will be taken to the Basilica of Bom Jesus, Se Cathedral, Church of St. Francis of Assisi; and the Archaeological Museum.

“As important as the G20 meetings, it is a priority to ensure that the visiting G20 delegates get an understanding of how Goa stands out for its history, heritage and culture. These excursions are planned meticulously and will allow delegates to take back great memories of moving around these places of interest that are significant till date. We have received tremendous support from ASI Goa Circle in curating these trips,” Nodal Officer (G20) Sanjit Rodrigues said.

Superintending Archaeologist at ASI Goa Hemsagar Naik revealed that they will install required signages during the delegates’ visit as the excursion is expected to last for two hours where each group of delegates will visit one monument at a time, allowing them to fully appreciate and understand the historical and architectural significance of each site.

Details shared by the G20 working committee state that the excursion will be organized in three groups, with around 45 delegates assigned to each group whose visits are scheduled at 10 am, 10:30 am and 11 am respectively.

In a bid to provide a ‘top notch’ sightseeing, while also ensuring the sites are in pristine condition, the concerned authorities have undertaken the upgradation of the roof and renovation of the walls in all monuments besides taking up the upgradation of the gardens at Basilica of Bom Jesus and Se Cathedral complexes.

“The entrance doors of all churches have been repaired and painted. Besides, restroom facilities have been improved with additional bio-toilets blocks planned. Other works include upgraded signage, cultural notice boards, and welcome boards. Electrified, painted compound walls, installed green nets, and landscaping have been undertaken in the area. UNESCO World Heritage Certificates have been installed at prominent locations,” the committee said.
