A day after concerned citizens planted saplings in potholes dotting the roads in Calangute roads, authorities went into overdrive trying to patch up the broken roads along the coast.
However, the patchwork undertaken with rubble and mud appears to be a case of remedy worse than the disease.
After a heavy shower the mud will wash away filling the roads with slush, making the situation even more dangerous for two-wheeler riders.
Members of the Calangute Constituency Forum who took the initiative to plant the saplings were not amused with the patch work and refused to take credit for the same.
“We are not concerned who does the repair work. What is important is that the work has to be done and the interest of the citizens is paramount,” said Premanand Divkar, President of Calangute Constituency Forum (CCF).
He said the patch work that was being carried out was just temporary measures and the Forum was concerned about permanent solutions.
“These are purely temporary measures. In one shower all the patch work will get washed away and with the mud the road will turn slippery,” Divkar warned.
He said the Forum will continue with its work of highlighting issues facing the constituency.
“We want three things from the government. Protect our hills, low-lying areas and give us proper infrastructure by way of better roads, power and water supply,” he said.
Some residents under the banner of the Calangute Constituency Forum on Sunday toured the coastal constituency identifying several potholes on the main and internal roads.
They then planted saplings in the potholes drawing the attention of the authorities to the bad condition of the roads.
