Four people were injured after a gang war broke out between two groups near Merces market during the wee hours of Sunday.
According to sources from Old Goa police station, accused Marcelino Dias from Curca and his friend Suraj Shetye picked an argument with accused Sameer Mulla from Chimbel and a group of 10 people near Govekar bar at Merces market.
The situation took an ugly turn where Dias called three of his associates. What followed was bouts of verbal arguments and abuses being hurled by both the groups which then led to clashes using knives, choppers, beer bottles, swords and reportedly a gun, added police sources.
Old Goa Police police have arrested eight persons after both groups filed counter complaints against each other. According to the police among those arrested were Marcelino Dias from Curca, Gauresh Naik and Vishal Golatkar both from Merces. Joshua Talwar, Mubara Mulla, Shaibaj Mulla from Althino, Niyaz Bega and Aktar Mulla from Chimbel. While one more is absconding and identity of two others is still unknown.
Accused Sameer Mulla, Abdul Maldar, Alif Nirgi from Chimbel and Suraj Shetye from Merces were seriously injured in the exchanges and are undergoing medical treatment.
Old Goa Police has registered an offence under Section 143, 147, 148, 324, 307 r/w 149 of IPC and section 3, 4 r/w 25 of arms act. PSI Ajay Dhuri is investigating the case.
