A garage in the congested located in the commercial capital was gutted in a major fire on Saturday morning.
While the entire property stacked inside the garage has been reduced to ashes, residents of the adjoining residential buildings had to bear the brunt of the thick black smoke that billowed out from the garage.
Given that the garage has been stacked with carbonation items, the entire located was enveloped by a layer of thick black smoke, causing pollution.
The fire broke out when denting work on vehicles was underway at the garage with the help of gas. It is suspected that the gas leakage was the cause of the fire which spread fast with the shop stacked with carbonation items.
Workers working in the garage tried to extinguish the fire, but in vain. Water pumps from the adjoining car wash was deployed to contain the fire before the fire brigade could arrive at the spot.
The Marao Fire brigade immediately rushed to the spot after receiving a call at around 10.18 am on Saturday. It took considerable time for the fire brigade to bring the fire under control.
Fire Officer Gill D’Sa informed that it took some time for the fire brigade to bring the fire under control because of the carbonation items stacked inside the garage. “The fire tender had to face the difficulty to reach the site because of the narrow road and vehicles parked alongside the road”, Gill said.
Even after the fire was brought under control, black smoke was still billowing out from the garage with the Fire Officer attributing the situation to the carbonating items and the loft inside the structure.
“We will find out whether the garage had the fire fighting equipment in place because they were carrying out the denting work on vehicle by using gas”, he said.
