A 16-year-old girl and her grandmother were injured in an acid attack at their residence in Guirim early Wednesday morning.

Mapusa Police have arrested two suspects, who are neighbours in the alleged attack.

The girl and the grandmother were asleep inside their home when acid was thrown on them from a window at around 5.30 am at Vancio-vaddo, Guirim.

The acid struck the girl’s cheek, chest and hand while some of it fell on the grandmother’s hand.

Both suffered burn injuries and were rushed to the North Goa District Hospital, where the grandmother was discharged after treatment, while the girl has been admitted to the hospital.

Normally, the girl used to sleep in another room. Unfortunately on Tuesday, the girl slept near the window along with her grandmother who had come on a visit to the house.

There were at least three power cuts in the night and since it was warm, the girl opened the window past mid-night, police sources said.

The family suspects that the power cuts may have also been orchestrated by the neighbours.

According to police sources, the girl’s family had an ongoing dispute with their neighbours on a traditional pathway and they suspect that their neighbours must have carried the dastardly acid act.

Based on the victim’s father, Motiram Dhargalkar’s complaint, police arrested alleged accused Narayan Gawas and Sanit Dessai under Sections 326 and 326 of the IPC and Child Act 8. PSI Paresh Ramnathkar is investigating the case.
