REVIVING OLD ART-FORM
* The foundation thinks photo-documentation of Kaavi in Goa is the need of the hour
* It will reach out to agencies, organizations and individuals for collaborating and funding
* The foundation has already identified 21 temples in Goa, which have Kaavi art-form
* Charles Correa Foundation has also identified four houses in Goa with this art-form

Charles Correa Foundation has taken upon itself to revive an old architectural art form called 'Kaavi'. The foundation is going to seek assistance from people, government agencies and organisations in this endeavour.
Noted author, Heta Pandit, will lead the project. Pandit said, "We find Kaavi in several old temples and houses in Goa. This is a beautiful art form, which requires fine red soil, charcoal and binding agent from plants. But, due to several reasons like property dispute, lack of knowledge or resources, people aren't able to restore it. We face the risk that Kaavi may become extinct in future"
Kaavi is an architectural art of etching on walls in religious structures and houses. This art is present in small pockets of both North and South Goa. There are three stages in the technique of this art-form: plastering of the wall area with lime, etching out the desired design, filling the design with a paste of kaav (fine red soil), charcoal and a binding agent.
Goa with its rich heritage has a number of similar art-forms. For instance, Sgraffito, which orginiated in Europe. Pandit emphasized that Kaavi originated in Goa. Structures with Kaavi are found even in Uttara Karnataka and Sawantwadi in Maharashtra.
One of the challenges in restoring Kaavi work is absence of traditional artists. Besides, many temples are family-owned, which are not able to maintain them due to lack of funds.
The foundation thinks photo-documentation of Kaavi in Goa is the need of the hour. For this, the foundation will reach out to agencies, organizations and individuals interested in collaborating and funding this research further. It will also accumulate information of existing and lost sites in Goa that showcase examples of Kaavi art-form.
The foundation has already identified 21 temples in Goa, which have Kaavi art-form, which include Kandrivas Temple in Pernem, Kshetrapal Temple in Agarvaddo and Partagali Math in Canacona among several others. It has also identified four houses in Goa with this art-form.
Pandit appealed to people that they should inform Charles Correa Foundation if there's any structure they know with Kaavi art work and in need of restoration.
