Speaking to The Goan, Rane said proposals to have full-time staff and new machinery have already been approved. “Our effort has been to strengthen the blood bank with a new core laboratory. Additionally, we have also cleared proposals to replace two machines that were running on outdated blood testing methods. Contracts to technicians have also been renewed,” said Rane.
Six technicians have been appointed on full-time basis while the proposal for 15 more is currently under consideration and is expected to be cleared in a few days. Similarly, pharmaceutical company Abott has been asked to replace two machines that are, according to Rane, working on an outdated ELISA system.The replacement for the old machines has already been made to the company, and the new machines are expected to reach the hospital in a month’s time. Since taking over, Rane said he would change systems at the blood-testing facilities at the hospital. This came after the discovery of existence of a blood-testing nexus with pathology labs outside the hospital that would charge patients between Rs 800 and Rs 2,000 for simple tests.
Rane has also said he would ensure that the dean functions full-time and has no additional charges. Currently, the acting dean Dr Shivanand Bandekar is also the MS and has additional charge of the department of microbiology.
