In a major boost to medical education in the State, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved an increase of 50 MBBS seats at Goa Medical College (GMC), taking the annual intake from 200 to 250 students from the 2026-27 academic year.
The approval marks another expansion in the college's undergraduate capacity, a year after the NMC had increased the intake from 180 to 200 seats for the 2024-25 academic year. The Goa government had submitted a proposal in 2025 seeking a further increase to 250 seats, which has now received the Commission's approval.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant welcomed the decision, saying it would create more opportunities for aspiring medical students, particularly Goan youth, while strengthening the State's healthcare workforce.
"The National Medical Commission has approved an increase of 50 MBBS seats at Goa Medical College, raising the total intake from 200 to 250 seats from the academic year 2026-27. This significant expansion will create greater opportunities for aspiring medical students, especially Goan youth, and further strengthen Goa's medical education ecosystem and healthcare human resources," Sawant said.
Health Minister Vishwajit Rane described the approval as "a proud milestone for Goa and a big step towards strengthening medical education."
"Delighted to share that the National Medical Commission has granted the Letter of Permission to increase MBBS seats at Goa Medical College from 200 to 250 for the Academic Year 2026-27. This will create more opportunities for aspiring doctors and further strengthen healthcare in Goa," Rane said.
