The ceremony was however attended by company officials with no government official present for the ‘Bhoomipujan’ at the site.
The GMR Airports officer Sheshan, GMR Board of Directors and other officials were present for the puja.
Speaking on the occasion, Sheshan said the Goa government handed over the land to the GMR to construct the airport. “We pray to God that the new international airport at Mopa becomes famous not only in the country, but all over the world,” he added.
The Goa government and the Bangalore-based GMR Airports, a subsidiary of GMC Infrastructure, had signed a concession agreement to develop and operate greenfield airport project at Mopa on Public Private Project (PPP) basis.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had laid the foundation stone for the proposed greenfield Mopa airport at Bambolim. The Mopa airport is expected to be ready by 2020.
