With monsoon gathering pace, several parts of Goa received widespread rain even as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday issued an orange alert for next two days while announcing the possibility of very heavy rainfall till June 26.
Among the various rain stations located in the State, Sanguem received heaviest rainfall at 102.8 mm in last 24 hours followed by Ponda at 80 mm and Sanquelim at 68.6 mm while the capital city received the least rainfall at 11.3 mm.
The Met department has said rainfall activity is very likely to increase during next four days due to active monsoon conditions persisting over the State.
The IMD said that the off-shore trough at mean sea level now runs along Karnataka-Kerala coasts while the westerly winds prevail in the lower levels of the atmosphere over Goa up to 5 km above mean sea level.
“The cyclonic circulation over Northwest Bay of Bengal adjoining north Odisha-West Bengal coasts extending upto 7.6 km above mean sea level tilting southwestwards with height persists. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to form over the same region during the next 24 hours,” the IMD said in a press note.
According to the IMD, very heavy rainfall (above 115.5mm) is very likely at isolated places on June 25 and 26 and heavy rainfall (above 64.4mm) is very likely at a few places from June 25 to 27.
The State is also likely to experience short intense spells of rain and winds gusting to around 40 to 50 kmph.
The Met department has also said that squally weather with wind speed 40-45 kmph gusting to 55 kmph is likely along and off South Maharashtra - Goa coast on from June 25 to 28.
Fishermen are advised not to venture along and off Goa coast for next four days.
