BELAGAVI
In a major raid against illicit trade of Goa liquor, Belagavi excise officials have seized Goa liquor worth Rs 47 lakh along the Jamboti-Khanapur road on Tuesday afternoon.
According to excise officials, acting on the specific information, a Gujarat-registered truck was intercepted at Modekop, near Khanapur, at around 2 pm. As many as 21,696 bottles of whiskey (3,905.28 litres) that was meant for sale in Goa were seized.
The raid was carried out under the guidance and direction of Dr Y Manjunath, Addl Commissioner of Excise (Crime), Dy Commisioner of Vanajakshi and Dy SP Ravi M Muegod.
Excise PI Davalsab Shindogi, PSI Jairam Hegde and a team carried out the raids.
The liquor was being transported in view of the forthcoming assembly elections in Karnataka.
The driver of the vehicle has been taken into custody and a case has been registered at Khanapur police station.
