Goa Police team attacked by armed mob in MP while escorting theft accused

PANAJI: A Goa Police team was attacked by an armed mob in Alirajpur district of Madhya Pradesh while escorting a theft accused to court for transit remand.

The team was escorting 38-year-old Hirasingh Bamniya, who was arrested in connection with multiple high-value housebreaking cases in Goa involving the theft of over Rs 40 lakh. The cases were reported from Devashree Greens in Porvorim and Prudential Paradise in Mapusa.

According to Goa Police, based on investigation inputs, a team travelled to Alirajpur, where, with the assistance of local police, they traced Bamniya to Bahadiya village under Bori Police Station. Described as the main accused and gang leader, Bamniya was apprehended after a one-kilometre chase through a jungle area.

The attack occurred while the police were taking the accused to the JMFC Court at Jobat after completing arrest formalities at Bori Police Station. The police vehicle was intercepted and damaged when a mob, allegedly armed with koitas and dandas, attempted to forcibly free the accused. Some police personnel sustained minor injuries but managed to retain custody of the accused until reinforcements arrived.

Goa Police said the Madhya Pradesh Police then provided security, and Bamniya is being brought to Goa on a transit warrant for further investigation. The force commended the bravery of its personnel and the support of the Madhya Pradesh Police.
