Goa sees sharp drop in dengue cases ahead of monsoon

Goa’s fight against dengue is showing strong results, with the Directorate of Health Services (DHS) reporting only one case in April. This is a sharp drop from six cases during the same month last year and 19 cases the year before.

Dr Kalpana Mahatme, Deputy Director and head of the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme in Goa, credited the decline to intensive efforts such as door-to-door awareness campaigns, removal of mosquito breeding sites, and targeted action in hotspot areas.

“Our teams, along with local panchayats, are working to eliminate breeding grounds. Community participation is vital,” she said.

From January to April this year, Goa recorded 11 dengue cases, compared to 29 cases during the same period in 2025 and 96 cases in 2024.

Officials said most cases this year were reported from migrant settlements, where open water storage has encouraged mosquito breeding.

They added that migrant workers arriving from dengue-prone States have contributed to a few sporadic cases, while some urban areas also reported infections.

Authorities continue to stress preventive measures, including keeping surroundings clean, emptying water from flower pots and containers twice a week, and ensuring stored water is tightly covered.

“If water is stored, it must be used within seven days,” Mahatme said.

The trend suggests Goa is gradually bringing dengue under control. However, officials warned that continued vigilance is necessary, especially with the monsoon approaching, as any complacency could reverse the progress made.
