Goa will be participating in the Indian Ocean wide tsunami mock drill on September 4 (Tuesday) and the exercise -- the Makran Trench scenario -- will be simulated.
The purpose of this exercise is to increase tsunami preparedness, evaluate response capabilities in each country and improve coordination throughout the region. The aim is to exercise multiple levels of the tsunami warning and response chain.
The exercise, titled Exercise Indian Ocean Wave 2018 (IOwave18), will simulate Indian Ocean countries being put into a Tsunami Warning situation requiring government decision making. It builds on previous Indian Ocean exercises conducted in 2009 (IOWave09), 2011 (IOWave11), 2014 (IOWave14) and 2016 (IOwave16) and on prior national tsunami warning exercises carried out to Andaman Islands in November 2013, to East of India in September 2015, to Kerala Coast in March 2016 and to East of India in November 2017.
During the exercise the Indian Tsunami Early Warning Centre (ITEWC) at Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), Hyderabad, will provide simulated tsunami threat information to all coastal states of India and to other countries in the Indian Ocean region. Each State/District will then evaluate the information and will be disseminated to the disaster response agencies participating in the exercise.
The objective of the current drill as far as South Goa District is concerned is to streamline and work out draft SOP for further mock drills which are proposed to be carried out in coastal talukas of the district in the upcoming months. In the coming exercises other stakeholders and community participation would be incorporated.

PANAJI: North Goa will witness a tsunami mock drill exercise on September 4 that will run for 12 hours from 11.30 am onwards. The drill will be held at Miramar beach in Panaji. The State administration has said there is no need for people to panic and co-operate with the government machinery for smooth conduct of
the drill.
