Goa-based firm offers to resolve waste problem at PDA markets

MARGAO: A Goa-based firm, Alterenergyz, has offered to resolve the waste imbroglio facing the SGPDA markets using the combination of aerobic and anaerobic composting methods.

In a proposal submitted to the SGPDA, which had come up for discussions at today’s meeting, the firm has promised to rid the market of the eyesore upon payment of monthly fees, approximately Rs 2.20 lakh.

The SGPDA is presently liable to pay to the Margao Municipal Council garbage collection fees amounting to Rs 1.50 lakh per month.

The firm has asked the PDA to make available an area admeasuring 200-250 square metres within the SGPDA complex, besides basic amenities such as power and water connections and the payment of the monthly operational cost.

SGPDA Chairman, MLA Wilfred D’Sa, said the PDA discussed the issue at Wednesday’s meeting and it has now been decided to visit Sada, Mormugao, to see the operation of a similar plant. 

“The members and officials will visit Sada before taking a call. Right now, the PDA has to pay Rs 1.50 lakh per month to the MMC for the clearance of waste from the SGDPA markets,” he said.

The scope of work includes collection of dry and wet waste from all identified points from the SGPDA complex. The firm will place bins at all critical station points such as fish cutting, vegetable market, chicken and meat shops; carry out secondary level segregation of waste; construction of shed in 200 square metres area allocated; setting up of various composting bins/stations required for composting all kinds of wet waste; setting up of minimum three crushers of various sizes at the composting station; disposal of dry waste post the segregation to authorised recyclers including GWMC and disposal of compost and leachate in a scientific manner.
