Goa's cashew industry thrives: Festival highlights economic contribution

Panaji:The festival, spanning three days, saw a remarkable turnout on its opening day, with crowds flocking to the 78 stalls set up for the occasion. These stalls were mandated to feature cashew in at least 75% of their offerings, showcasing the versatility of the cashew nut in various delicacies.

During his address, Minister Gaude emphasized the importance of preserving agricultural land, comparing it to gold due to its significance for cashew cultivation. Dr. Deviya Rane echoed this sentiment in her speech, emphasizing the festival's role in preserving Goan culture while empowering local communities, especially women-led rural self-help groups.

She highlighted the festival as a platform for discussing crucial topics such as improving cashew yields and addressing challenges faced by farmers. Technical sessions and workshops were organized to facilitate collaboration and innovation within the cashew industry, aiming to ensure its sustainability and benefit local communities in the long run.

Currently, Goa produces approximately 25,800 tonnes of raw cashews annually, supporting a significant portion of the state's economy. With around 20 processing industries in operation, employing over 3,500 workers, the cashew sector plays a vital role in Goa's economic landscape.

The Goa Forest Development Corporation (GFDC) has been actively involved in initiatives to enhance cashew cultivation and processing, ensuring its continued growth and contribution to the local economy.

Overall, the Cashew Festival serves as more than just a celebration of the nut; it's a symbol of tradition, culture, and community empowerment, aiming to sustain and promote the rich heritage of Goan cashew cultivation for generations to come.
