In a welcome relief to Goa’s kitty, excise collections for both August and September increased by 18.7 per cent.
The collection stood at Rs 65.03 crore, which was 18.7% more than Rs 54.78 crore excise collections in the same period last year.
The government collected Rs 36.5 crore as excise in August 2018, which was a massive 52.5% more than Rs 23.94 crore excise collections in August 2017.
In September 2018, there was a dip of 7.5% in excise collections, which stood at Rs 28.53 crore as compared to Rs 30.84 crore in September 2017.
Sources told The Goan, “The government expects much higher growth from October 2018 onwards when the tourism season kicks in. As tourists pour in the state, the consumption of liquor also goes up giving a push to excise collections.”
In this financial year 2018-19, the government’s excise collections have been on a huge upswing. The Goan Everyday had earlier reported that state’s excise earnings grew by 56.5% for the three months of May, June and July put together.
The growth in excise collections is on account of both increased consumption of alcohol and also hike in excise rates by the government.
Just before the start of FY 2018-19, the government had implemented steep increase in excise duty on the manufacture of various types of alcoholic products.
