Goencho Ekvott, an umbrella group of over 30 organisations fighting against three linear projects, has now extended its support to 80 candidates for the upcoming Panchayat elections from different parts of the State.
Speaking to reporters, social activist Olencio Simoes said the organisation wanted to give support to the people who had the urge to carry out development at the village level for the benefit of the people.
"We have decided to field candidates across Mormugao and parts of Salcete, Canacona, Quepem and even Sanguem talukas. These candidates will be fielded with an objective to protect the constituency, village and wards, while also opposing projects like the three linear projects,” said Simoes.
Goencho Ekvott founder member Orville Dourado said the main objective was to file fresh candidates who had witnessed the destruction of villages in the name of development.
"Every village faces its own peculiar issues and we are backing the youth who believe in saving villages from mass destruction even along the coastlines with sand dunes, which are natural barriers against cyclones,” said Dourado.
"We have had meetings with concerned citizens who have identified people for their wards and while some are fresh faces, some are senior citizens who are retired government officials who approached us as they did not have the backing and did not want to be identified with any political parties.”
“Goencho Ekvott is not a part of any political party but most of our executive members are working in the grassroots and have a huge connect across the constituencies," said Dourado.
