A 5-metre long portion of a protection wall collapses at the Dumane culvert bridge. Captured by : Kathy Fernandes
CANACONA
A portion of the protection wall which was erected by PWD on the culvert bridge along the Canacona-Agonda road collapsed at Dumane.
According to sources, an unidentified vehicle going towards Agonda is believed to have knocked down about 5-metres of the laterite stone wall while negotiating a sharp right turn at the bridge.
A number of laterite stones fell on the concrete water supply pipeline alongside the culvert and some fell into the rivulet below.
The Dumane Culvert bridge had been notorious for several mishaps and in the absence of a protection wall, a number of 2-wheelers had even fallen off the bridge and into the rivulet.
After repeated complaints, rumblers and speed breakers were erected on either side of the culvert, but many tourists/visitors especially on two-wheelers were unaware of the sharp turn and would be involved in mishaps.
Then in a surprise move, the PWD erected bamboo railings to alert motorists, inviting ridicule on social media.
Following strong criticism and at the intervention of then Canacona MLA Isidore Fernandes, the PWD constructed a protection wall with laterite stones on either side of the culvert bridge.
