CANACONA

With no end to the garbage imbroglio in Canacona, NGO ‘Goenkar’ formed a year ago with one-point agenda 'Clean and Beautiful Canacona' is back in action.

Despite the main Canacona town serviced by municipal council, Goenkar since last year regularly engages people on a day-to-day basis to maintain cleanliness of Palolem and its sorroundings.

Goenkar general secretary Vikas Bhagat said that earlier they used to clean Palolem, but now the cleaning drive has started in Chaudi too. “Seven labourers went all over Chaudi and collected 50 bags of garbage,” he said.

To supervise the labourers, Goenkar president Jack Fernandes, John Coutinho, Umesh Tubki, Nandeep Bhagat and Councillor Diwakar Pagi were present.

Incidentally, Chaudi town is the main commercial hub and even Canacona Municipal Council (CMC) office and other civic complexes are located at Chaudi town.

“Cleaning the whole of municipality region will take at least one month. After which we will start with Agonda region, as we did last year. Last year, the cleaning drive took us more than three months to clean all of Canacona. We hope to do it in the same time period or even in less time this year.”

Bhagat appealed to all citizens of Canacona to support them by doing their bit in disposing garbage bags at designated locations and keeping Canacona clean and green.

“Small steps, big difference,” said Jack Fernandes.
