Govt criticised over Konkani script discrimination in jobs

MARGAO
The Global Romi Lipi Abhiyan has slammed the statement made by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant that Konkani language is now made mandatory for government jobs to protect the interest of locals.

Global Romi Lipi Abhiyan president Kennedy Afonso said making Konkani in Devanagiri language only mandatory for government jobs is clearly a move made to discriminate against the minority Catholic community, which is using the Roman script in all walks of life.

“It looks as if CM Pramod Sawant does not consider the minorities of Goa as locals, or he would have ensured to set the question paper in both Devanagiri and Roman script. On the contrary, he is more concerned about the Marathi writers getting justice, but has no concern for the minorities community, which has been demanding Justice for Roman script for last 38 years,” Kennedy said.

He added: “In a recent examination held by the Goa Staff Selection Commission, most job applicants from the minorities community, who had answered the Konkani examination paper in Devanagiri failed. Many got zeros in their exams. This means that all government jobs will definitely go to the majority community, and this is clearly a discriminatory strategy used to favour only one community.”
