A fortnight after the Department of Planning and Statistics withdrew all staff from the Salcete Sub-Registrar’s office, crippling the functioning of the births and deaths section, the government has deputed three staff to man the office, of which two have assumed duties while an existing staffer has proceeded on medical leave.
In effect, the Sub-Registrar’s office handling the births and deaths section had only two staffers working on Friday, with one employee yet to assume office, while the existing female staffer proceeded on leave.
Questions are being raised in the corridors of the Sub-Registrar’s office whether the deployment of two-three employees will help the public in general when the office could not cope up with the load with even eight-nine employees.
Sources in the know told The Goan that the around 400-plus verifications of documents sent by the Portuguese consulate are presently pending in the office. Similarly, issuance of birth and death certificates have been pending since the last one month and half, sources said, wondering whether the deployment of two-three staffers will help tide over the huge pendency.
An official in the know pointed out that the staff is also required to make appearance in the courts in respect of fresh registration of births, adding “the government ought to have taken all these aspects into account before deploying the three employees in the office.”
